Handmade Business Owners: Are You Paying Yourself a Salary?

be kind, yourself, inspirational quote Happy Tuesday, friends!

In a post last week, I briefly touched on the importance of pricing your wares.  I have worked through my prices so that I am paying myself for the time I spend creating jewelry, and this is a good thing. But last night I was thinking about all of the other work that I do to grow my little business. Unpaid work. It struck me that perhaps I should be paying myself for those hours... Duh, Cara.

I checked my email this morning and found a very timely email from Flourish & Thrive Academy.  Today's content  included a link to their wake up call of a blog post - Are you paying yourself a Salary Every month? Five actions to guarantee you get paid first. It makes several great points, including one that really stuck home :

"If you aren't paying yourself you don't have a business, you have a hobby."

For me, these words struck a chord.  Truly successful business owners pay themselves for all the hours they work. It's a good way to ensure that all the work feels worth it at the end of the day. Especially when your job is something you love, you should pay yourself enough to ensure that your business stays something you love.

For those of you running small or handmade businesses, how do you pay yourself?
